About SambanistasWho are the SambanistasSambanistas is Perth's original Samba percussion group, and we think we're also a lot of fun! Our members come from all walks of life, ages and backgrounds and are brought together by an interest in percussion music and having fun. We have members with lots of different musical abilities, from people who have never played an instrument before to professional musicians. Everyone is welcome!
Enjoying LifeIs what we are learning to do best of all. Even at the most basic level, participating in Sambanistas group music and choreography will leave you feeling refreshed and energised. Drumming with a large group in the festival parades and watching thousands of onlookers become infected with the energy that we create is a uniquely uplifting experience.
Self fundingSambanistas is an incorporated not for profit association. Our activities are subsidised by the income we receive from selling performances and workshops to other organisations. Our operation is overseen by an elected committee that meets on a monthly basis. MusicOur primary pursuit is providing regular no cost workshops in Brazilian style street percussion for anyone who cares to attend, regardless of their musical knowledge or experience. Sambanistas is often touted as being suitable for anyone who can count to two and walk at the same time. Our members range from complete novices to skilled multi-instrumentalists - even professional orchestral percussionists. We play carnival style arrangements of the traditional rhythms of Brazil. A new program started last year to develop mentoring within the group and train individuals up to the level of Musical Director. Performance artsSambanistas music is supplemented with a whole range of Carnival activities. We run a range of workshops including percussion, making your own samba instrument (shakers, drums) and head dress. All our activities are run as facilitated workshops and no experience is necessary to attend. Sambanistas encourage interested individuals to develop their skills to a level such that they can facilitate workshops or lead the band. Sambanistas has had a very successful life over the past 19 years. Past members have developed skills to the point that they now work as professionals in the Arts industry and some have even started their own groups.
